Can Rats Eat Apples?
Updated November 2026.
Yes, rats can have a little washed apple flesh as a treat. Remove the core and seeds, and keep fruit within the normal ration rather than adding a second meal.
Why apple flesh is different from apple seeds
The fresh-food question is about flesh, not a whole core left to chew. We recommend removing the core and seeds so the serving is unambiguous. Cornell’s animal-science guidance discusses cyanogenic compounds in apple seeds and distinguishes occasional seeds from eating peach kernels. That is not a rat-dose calculator. There is no reason to deliberately offer seeds when the flesh is the intended treat. Cornell Animal Science: fruit seeds and kernels
Can rats eat the skin?
The CoFID food used below is explicitly raw eating apple, flesh and skin. Wash the fruit and discard damaged or spoiled parts. Peeling is an option for texture preference, not a magic way to turn a large portion into a balanced meal. The nutrient figures are food-composition data, not evidence of a special benefit for rat teeth or a cure for illness.
What about juice, applesauce and dried apple?
These forms should not inherit a blanket yes from fresh apple flesh. Juice is easy to over-offer and is not a replacement for drinking water. Applesauce may contain added sugar, spices or other ingredients; check the jar rather than assuming it is plain. Dried apple has less water, so a small-looking amount is not equivalent to the same-looking fresh piece. Fresh plain flesh is the simplest recommendation.
How does apple fit with other fruit?
RSPCA Australia lists apple as an example of a fruit treat, while the UK RSPCA allows small amounts of fruit within the daily allowance. That supports variety rather than an apple-only fresh menu. If a rat already ate ordinary apple flesh and seems normal, watch its usual eating and droppings. If seeds were chewed, the amount is uncertain or the rat becomes unwell, seek advice from your exotics vet with a clear account of what was eaten. RSPCA Australia: What should I feed my rats?
The food facts, not a rat serving size
These are values per 100 g of the named food, from Public Health England: CoFID 2021, table 1.3 Proximates. They describe the food, not an amount to feed a rat. Preparation and variety matter; these are reference values, not a measurement of your particular portion.

Keep the whole ration in view
RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.
Make the usual food interesting
Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.
