Rat Food Game: Safe or Not?

Can rats eat it? Play Safe or Not, the Bruxlings rat food game: sort 12 foods into every day, sometimes or never, then see how well you know what pet rats can eat. Every answer comes from our rat food chart, which follows RSPCA, Woodgreen Pets Charity and Burgess Pet Care feeding advice.

How the game works
Each round deals 12 cards: four from each list, drawn from about 50 foods that rat owners ask about, such as raisins, pak choi, lettuce, guinea pig food and squash. Pick Every day, Sometimes or Never. After each answer you see the reason, and at the end you get the foods worth a second look.
- Every day means small portions of fresh veg alongside a complete rat food, taken out of the daily allowance rather than added on top.
- Sometimes means tiny treats: fruit is sugary and seeds are fatty.
- Never means leave it out. Where sources disagree, as they do on grapes, the game follows the more cautious advice.
Not sure about a food the game does not cover? Try the rat food checker, and if it is not listed, leave it out and ask a vet who treats rats.

Common questions
Can rats eat raisins?
No. The RSPCA advises against raisins and grapes, so both are on our never list. Sources differ on grapes; we follow the more cautious advice.
Can rats eat guinea pig or hamster food?
Not as the main food. It is made for other animals, and the RSPCA notes it will not give rats the nutrients they need. Use a complete food made for rats.
Can rats eat pak choi and lettuce?
Yes, in small portions. Kale, pak choi, spring greens and romaine lettuce are on our fresh veg list, offered within the daily allowance.
What fruit can rats eat?
As tiny treats: apple without pips, pear, banana, strawberry, melon, peach, mango and blueberries. Leave out citrus fruit, grapes and raisins.
Where do the answers come from?
From our rat food chart, built on rat feeding guidance from the RSPCA, Woodgreen Pets Charity and Burgess Pet Care. If a rat has eaten something worrying, contact a vet promptly.
