Can Rats Eat Grapes?

Updated November 2026.

Avoid grapes as a precaution, following the RSPCA. UK welfare advice differs, so we explain that disagreement rather than promising that seedless grapes are safe.

Why is advice about grapes so confusing?

The RSPCA lists grapes among harmful foods to avoid. Woodgreen, another UK animal welfare charity, lists grapes among examples of fresh chopped fruit for rats. Those are genuinely different recommendations. Our pick is to leave grapes out because they are optional and there are other suitable fresh foods. This is precautionary advice, not evidence that every grape exposure has the same outcome.

Are green, red or seedless grapes different?

CoFID separates red and green grapes and also provides an average. Those entries describe nutrient composition, not a safety ranking. Removing pips changes a physical feature, but it does not answer the welfare disagreement. We would not use colour, an organic label or a seedless variety to overturn the RSPCA advice. Nor have we found a UK care source here that says peeling makes the concern disappear.

What does the dog warning actually tell us?

The Veterinary Poisons Information Service describes kidney injury after grape-related exposures in dogs and uncertainty around a toxic dose. That supports taking dog exposures seriously. It does not supply a rat serving size, and we do not transfer dog thresholds to rats. Equally, an owner saying their rat previously ate grapes without a visible problem is not a guarantee for another animal. Veterinary Poisons Information Service: grape-related kidney injury in dogs

What if a rat has already eaten raw grapes?

Remove access, note the approximate amount and time, and call your exotics vet for tailored advice if any was eaten or the amount is unclear. Tell them whether the food was fresh grape, dried fruit, juice or a mixed dessert. If the rat is weak, unusually quiet, not eating or breathing abnormally, seek prompt veterinary attention. Do not wait for an online argument about which colour grape is safest.

The food facts, not a rat serving size

These are values per 100 g of the named food, from Public Health England: CoFID 2021, table 1.3 Proximates. They describe the food, not an amount to feed a rat. Preparation and variety matter; these are reference values, not a measurement of your particular portion.

Exact entry and code Water (g) Sugars (g) Fat (g) Protein (g)
Grapes, average (14-350) 81.9 16.1 0.2 0.7
Grapes, green (14-322) 82.7 15.2 0.2 0.7
Grapes, red (14-323) 81.1 17.0 0.1 0.6

Keep the whole ration in view

RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.

Make the usual food interesting

Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.

Compare guinea pig food and hamster food and rabbit food. Each answer considers that food separately; a yes for one ingredient is not permission for a mixed dish.
