Can Rats Eat Hamster Food?
Updated November 2026.
Avoid hamster food as the regular rat diet. Both animals being omnivores does not make their commercial foods nutritionally interchangeable.
Hamsters are omnivores, so why not share?
The argument sounds sensible but skips the formulation. The RSPCA specifically says to feed food designed for rats rather than hamster pellets. A species name is not just packet decoration: the full balance of energy, minerals and other nutrients matters. A food marketed for both rats and mice is a different proposition from one labelled only for hamsters.
A real hamster and rat label comparison
Science Selective Hamster declares protein 19%, crude fibre 5%, fat 5%, calcium 0.8% and phosphorus 0.6%. Science Selective Rat & Mouse declares protein 14%, crude fibre 4%, fat 4%, calcium 0.6% and phosphorus 0.4%. These examples show a formulation difference; they are not universal hamster-versus-rat specifications. Neither protein percentage alone nor the similar-looking nuggets proves nutritional adequacy for the other species. Supreme: Science Selective Hamster; Supreme: Science Selective Rat & Mouse
Is hamster muesli different from hamster pellets?
A mix adds another issue: a rat can choose the most appealing bits and leave the rest. RSPCA Australia warns about selective feeding from seed mixes. Pellets reduce that opportunity, but hamster pellets still have the species mismatch. Do not assume a bowl looking empty means every ingredient was eaten; rats can move food into a stash. If the rat food has run out
Do not turn a temporary cupboard problem into a permanent switch. Obtain the normal suitable rat ration and ask your exotics vet for a short-term plan if that is not possible, especially for an ill or growing rat. Keep the hamster-food bag if some was eaten. A vet needs the ingredients and duration, not just the word hamster. Poor appetite, continued digestive upset or weight loss warrants advice rather than repeated experimental substitutions.
Keep the whole ration in view
RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.
Make the usual food interesting
Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.

Compare rabbit food and pak choi and lettuce. Each answer considers that food separately; a yes for one ingredient is not permission for a mixed dish.
Frequently asked questions
Can rats eat hamster food?
Not as the routine staple: use food formulated for rats.
Can rats have hamster food?
An accidental taste and a long-term diet are different; do not use the former to justify the latter.
Can rats eat hamster and gerbil food?
A hamster-and-gerbil label still does not establish that the food is suitable for rats.
Are hamster pellets better than a seed mix?
Pellets limit picking, but that does not correct a species mismatch.
Can I mix hamster food into rat pellets?
Avoid using another species’ formula to bulk out the staple; ask your vet about any necessary temporary change.
