Can Rats Eat Marshmallows?
Updated November 2026.
Avoid marshmallows as a planned rat treat. They are concentrated sugary confectionery, and their sticky texture is an unnecessary complication when better treats are available.
What does a marshmallow actually contribute?
The CoFID entry below describes a confectionery food with substantial sugar and no recorded fibre. Its low fat figure is not a health recommendation: a sweet can be low in fat and still be a poor routine choice. The UK RSPCA advises keeping sugary foods limited, while RSPCA Australia recommends avoiding sweets and sticky foods that could pose a choking hazard. RSPCA Australia: What should I feed my rats?
Is the main issue sugar or stickiness?
Both matter to the decision, but they are different points. Sugar describes nutritional composition. Stickiness describes how a food behaves in the mouth. We are not claiming that every tiny crumb will cause choking; we are saying there is no good need to choose a sticky sweet when a suitable piece of fresh vegetable or some of the normal ration can serve as a reward.
Are mini, vegan or toasted marshmallows better?
Mini is a size label, not a nutritional endorsement. Vegan changes ingredients but does not by itself remove sugar or sticky texture. Toasting or melting is not a demonstrated way to make marshmallows suitable for rats and can add a hot, tacky surface. Chocolate coating introduces another food the UK RSPCA advises avoiding. Read the exact packet rather than generalising across a whole sweet aisle.
My rat already ate a marshmallow
Remove the remaining sweets and check the ingredients, amount and whether the piece was coated or melted. If your rat appears to struggle to breathe, repeatedly paws at its mouth, collapses or is visibly distressed, seek emergency veterinary help. Do not force water or more food into its mouth. If it seems well after a small taste, monitor normal eating and behaviour and ask your exotics vet if you are unsure. This is not a situation for a home sugar antidote.
The food facts, not a rat serving size
These are values per 100 g of the named food, from Public Health England: CoFID 2021, table 1.3 Proximates. They describe the food, not an amount to feed a rat. Preparation and variety matter; these are reference values, not a measurement of your particular portion.
| Exact entry and code | Water (g) | Sugars (g) | Fat (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marshmallows (17-114) | 17.4 | 64.5 | 0.0 | 3.9 |

Keep the whole ration in view
RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.
Make the usual food interesting
Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.
