Can Rats Eat Peaches?
Updated November 2026.
Yes, a little ripe peach flesh can fit general fruit guidance. Remove the stone completely; the kernel inside it is not part of the treat.
The important distinction: flesh versus stone
A peach is not one uniform feeding item. The soft flesh is the part intended here; the hard stone and kernel are excluded. ASPCA Poison Control identifies cyanide in peach seeds, stems and leaves; its entry concerns dogs, cats and horses, so we do not treat it as a rat-specific risk measurement. That supports a clear preparation boundary, not a claim that a trace of peach juice is poisonous or a basis for calculating a rat dose. ASPCA Poison Control: Peach plant and seeds
Fresh peaches or canned peaches?
The dataset makes preparation visible. Raw peach flesh and skin have their own entry, while peaches canned in syrup have a separate one. The syrup entry below covers the whole contents, so it is not an exact analysis of a drained, rinsed slice. Use fresh ripe flesh for the simplest recommendation rather than silently applying fresh-fruit figures to a sweet dessert.
Can rats eat peach skin?
The fresh CoFID entry includes skin, but it remains a composition table rather than a food-specific care recommendation. Wash the fruit, remove damaged parts and cut away the stone carefully. Peeling can change texture if your rat prefers softer flesh. Do not offer orchard leaves, stems or the kernel as an extra because the flesh is acceptable; those are different parts of the plant.
What if the rat already found a peach stone?
Take it away and establish whether the stone stayed intact or was cracked and chewed. Keep any fragments and contact your exotics vet if the kernel may have been eaten, the amount is uncertain or your rat seems unwell. Breathing difficulty, collapse or marked weakness needs urgent attention. Do not try a kitchen antidote. If it was only a little plain flesh, return to the normal ration and watch for digestive upset rather than offering more fruit to compensate.
The food facts, not a rat serving size
These are values per 100 g of the named food, from Public Health England: CoFID 2021, table 1.3 Proximates. They describe the food, not an amount to feed a rat. Preparation and variety matter; these are reference values, not a measurement of your particular portion.

Keep the whole ration in view
RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.
Make the usual food interesting
Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.
