Can Rats Eat Rabbit Food?
Updated November 2026.
Avoid rabbit food as a rat staple, including rabbit pellets. The RSPCA recommends rat-specific food rather than a herbivore ration.
Why rabbit pellets are not rat pellets
The RSPCA singles out rabbit pellets as unsuitable substitutes. The main issue is the ration as a whole, rather than a pellet being hard or green. Rabbits and rats have different feeding needs, so a commercial recipe balanced for one is not automatically balanced for the other. Soaking a pellet changes texture, not its nutrient proportions.
What do actual labels show?
Science Selective Adult Rabbit declares crude protein 14%, crude fibre 25%, fat 4%, calcium 0.6% and phosphorus 0.4%. Science Selective Rat & Mouse declares protein 14%, crude fibre 4%, fat 4%, calcium 0.6% and phosphorus 0.4%. The matching protein number is a useful lesson: one matching nutrient cannot establish equivalence when the overall recipes differ so much. These figures describe these products, not every rabbit food. Supreme: Science Selective Adult Rabbit; Supreme: Science Selective Rat & Mouse
Is hay-based food poisonous to rats?
Unsuitable as a staple is not the same claim as acutely poisonous. The rabbit product lists alfalfa meal, soya bean hulls and wheat among its ingredients and is designed around a rabbit diet. We do not need to invent a claim that rats cannot digest any plant fibre to explain why it should not replace rat food. Nor does the word natural tell you which species a ration suits.
What if your rats have already eaten rabbit food?
Check whether this was a loose pellet stolen during free roam or their main food for a longer period. Keep the label and explain the duration to your exotics vet if the substitution has been ongoing. Do not try to repair the recipe by guessing how much protein to add. If your rat is not eating normally, has persistent loose droppings or is losing weight, arrange veterinary advice. Store each species’ food in a clearly labelled container to prevent the same mix-up.
Keep the whole ration in view
RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.
Make the usual food interesting
Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.

Compare pak choi and lettuce and weetabix. Each answer considers that food separately; a yes for one ingredient is not permission for a mixed dish.
Frequently asked questions
Can rats have rabbit food?
Do not choose it as their staple. Use a suitable rat-specific ration.
Can rats eat rabbit food?
They may eat it, but willingness does not show that it meets their nutritional needs.
Can rats eat rabbit pellets?
Pellet form does not remove the species mismatch.
Can soaked rabbit pellets feed an older rat?
Soaking changes texture only. Ask your exotics vet about an appropriate soft diet.
Is matching protein enough?
No. The example labels match on protein but differ substantially on crude fibre.
