Can Rats Eat Raisins?
Updated November 2026.
Avoid raisins as a precaution: the RSPCA includes them among foods not to give rats. Drying also concentrates grape sugars into a very small mouthful.
Why are raisins different from a little fresh fruit?
A raisin is a dried grape, not a separate kind of seed. Much of its water has gone, so its small size is misleading when you compare it with fresh produce. The composition figures below show why a pinch of dried fruit is not nutritionally equivalent to the same weight of fresh grape. Sugar concentration is an additional reason not to choose it, rather than proof that sugar explains the welfare warning.
Do UK care sources agree?
The RSPCA explicitly lists raisins and grapes among foods to avoid. Woodgreen lists fresh grapes among its examples of chopped fruit, but does not thereby endorse raisins. We follow the more cautious RSPCA choice here. That is a practical feeding recommendation, not a claim that every accidental raisin causes poisoning. The Veterinary Poisons Information Service discusses grape-related kidney injury in dogs; dog advice should not be converted into a rat toxicity threshold. What about sultanas, currants and cereal bars?
Sultanas and dried vine currants belong in the same avoid-by-choice category as raisins. They are easy to overlook in breakfast cereals, trail mix, fruit loaf and snack bars. A blackcurrant is a different fruit, so do not turn this advice into a ban on every berry with currant in its name. Read the ingredients rather than relying on the packet photograph.
My rat already ate a raisin
Remove the remaining snack and keep the packet. Note when it happened and roughly what is missing, then contact your exotics vet for individual advice, particularly if the amount is uncertain or your rat seems unwell. Do not try to calculate a safe amount from advice for dogs. Do not attempt a home antidote. A calm account of the actual food is more useful to the vet than an internet toxicity number.
The food facts, not a rat serving size
These are values per 100 g of the named food, from Public Health England: CoFID 2021, table 1.3 Proximates. They describe the food, not an amount to feed a rat. Preparation and variety matter; these are reference values, not a measurement of your particular portion.
| Exact entry and code | Water (g) | Sugars (g) | Fat (g) | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raisins, dried (14-393) | 17.4 | 62.6 | 1.0 | 3.0 |
| Grapes, average (14-350) | 81.9 | 16.1 | 0.2 | 0.7 |

Keep the whole ration in view
RSPCA: What to feed pet rats recommends rat-specific food as the staple, with suitable fresh variety inside the normal allowance. An appealing snack is not evidence of a balanced meal. For the wider picture, use our rat diet and nutrition guide, check another ingredient in the rat food checker, or start at the Pet rat care hub.
Make the usual food interesting
Fresh treats do not need to carry all the entertainment. Our Mushroom Rat Foraging Cups are a pair of cage-mounted cups for small dry treats, dried herbs or scatter feed. Use them for the usual suitable dry ration rather than wet fruit, sticky sweets or foods marked avoid here. Check fittings and remove damaged cups, following the product care instructions.

Related food questions
Compare grapes and guinea pig food and hamster food. Each answer considers that food separately; a yes for one ingredient is not permission for a mixed dish.
Frequently asked questions
Can pet rats eat raisins?
We recommend avoiding them, following the RSPCA. Choose suitable fresh vegetables instead.
Can rats have raisins as a treat?
A treat is still food. The RSPCA warning is not limited to daily feeding.
Do rats eat raisins?
They may willingly take them. Willingness to eat something does not establish that it is a good choice.
Are dried grapes safer than fresh grapes?
No reason to assume that: raisins are dried grapes, with more concentrated sugars.
What if my rat ate a chocolate raisin?
Contact your exotics vet with the packet, amount and time. Chocolate is also on the RSPCA avoid list.
