What to Do with Pet Ashes

When your pet's ashes come home, there is no need to decide anything straight away. They can stay in the container they come back in for as long as you need. These are the choices most people weigh up, so you can take your time.

Keep them at home

Many people keep their pet's ashes at home in an urn, somewhere they pass every day: a shelf, a windowsill, beside a favourite photograph. An urn with a portrait made from your pet's photos can make that place feel like theirs.

Bury them in the garden

Some families bury the ashes in the garden, under a tree or in a favourite sunny spot, and mark the place with a stone. If you rent, or might move one day, think about that first: a marker can move with you, and so can ashes kept in an urn.

Scatter them somewhere that mattered

A walk they loved, a beach, a hillside. If the land belongs to someone else, ask the owner first. Some people scatter part of the ashes and keep the rest at home.

Keep a little, share the rest

When a family lives in more than one home, each person may want to keep something. Ashes can be divided, so one part stays in an urn and another is buried or scattered.

Wait until you are ready

There is no deadline. Plenty of people keep the ashes safely put away for months before choosing, and that is fine.
