Pet cremation costs in the UK: comparing quotes
Updated November 2026 · White Doe by Ripleys Nest
Pet cremation costs depend on the pet’s size, the type of cremation and what the quote includes. Compare written, itemised quotes rather than a single headline price. Individual and communal cremation are different choices, particularly if you want your pet’s ashes returned.
For memorial choices, explore pet urns and our urns and keepsake urns. You can read first and decide later; no purchase is needed to remember your pet.

Why is there no single UK pet cremation price?
A quote may cover cremation alone or a wider service arranged through a veterinary practice. Collection, return of ashes, a container and optional keepsakes can be included or charged separately. The same word on two websites may not describe an identical service. Ask for the provider’s own explanation and a total for your circumstances. National averages cannot tell you what your local provider will charge, and an advertised starting price may apply only to the smallest animals.
What is the difference between individual and communal cremation?
With an individual service, ask how your pet is identified and how their ashes are returned. With communal cremation, several pets are cremated together and you should not expect separately identifiable ashes back. Confirm the arrangement directly rather than assuming from the price or a package name. If keeping ashes matters to you, say that before agreeing to the service. If it does not, choosing a communal option does not say anything about how deeply you loved your pet.

What should an itemised quote include?
Ask whether the total includes collection from your location, the cremation, the return of ashes where applicable and the standard container. Then ask about any charges for distance, collection times, a larger pet, witnessing or a chosen memorial. Request the total including applicable taxes. Keep optional items separate from the essential service so you can compare like with like. You can decide about a permanent urn later if the provider can return ashes in a suitable temporary container.
Do you need to buy an urn at the same time?
Not necessarily. Ask what container comes with the service and whether the ashes will be inside a sealed bag. Before buying another urn, obtain the actual volume of ashes or the required internal capacity, and check that the bag fits through its opening. A pet’s weight can guide an estimate, but it cannot guarantee a fit. Decorative outside dimensions are not a capacity measurement. Keep the original identification label with the ashes when changing containers.
| Question | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|
| Individual or communal? | Determines whether separately identifiable ashes are returned |
| Collection included? | Travel or out-of-hours charges may be separate |
| What container is included? | A permanent memorial may be optional |
| What is the total? | Starting prices and complete quotes are not interchangeable |
How can you compare two different quotes?
Write both quotes in the same small table: service type, collection, ashes return, container and total. If one includes something the other does not, ask its cost rather than guessing. Ask who will provide the service and who you can speak to about the arrangements. A lower price may reflect a simpler service, while a higher price may include extras you do not want. Choose the arrangement you understand and feel comfortable with, not the most elaborate memorial package.
What if cost is difficult right now?
Tell the veterinary practice or crematorium your budget before agreeing to extras and ask them to explain the available options. Do not assume an optional keepsake is part of necessary care. A letter, photograph or familiar walk can be a meaningful memorial without buying anything. If you are comparing providers, you can ask a trusted person to help write down the answers. There is no need to defend a simpler choice or prove your love through spending.

Actual provider price examples, checked November 2026
For a concrete comparison, the CPC Cares published price list, read on 6 November 2026, shows the examples below. These are one provider’s advertised prices, not UK averages or a quote for your pet. Individual dog prices listed here cover return in a presentation container only; additional charges may apply. Confirm the current total directly before agreeing.
| Published service example | Advertised price |
|---|---|
| Individual dog cremation, up to 8 kg | £201.88 |
| Individual dog cremation, 8.1–25 kg | £235.87 |
| Individual dog cremation, 25.1–40 kg | £268.83 |
| Communal cat or rabbit cremation | From £37.50 |
| Communal dog cremation, up to 40 kg | From £60 |
The difference is not simply the container: the service and whether separately identifiable ashes are returned differ too. CPC also lists separate courier charges. Ask your own provider which collection, return and memorial costs are included rather than using these examples as an all-in budget.
Memorial choices, if and when you want them
A memorial can hold ashes, show a likeness or simply mark a place in your life. These are different purposes. Check the individual product description, capacity where relevant and care guidance before choosing; a sculpture is not automatically an urn. Our current range includes:
Questions people ask
How much is pet cremation in the UK?
There is no universal price. Ask for an itemised local quote based on your pet and chosen service.
Are ashes returned after communal cremation?
Do not expect separately identifiable ashes from a communal service. Confirm the provider’s arrangement before booking.
Is an expensive urn compulsory?
Ask what standard container is included. A permanent memorial can often be considered separately.
Can I arrange cremation directly?
Ask your chosen provider whether they accept direct arrangements and what collection or transport options they offer.
Does a cheaper choice mean less care?
Price alone does not establish the service quality. Ask clear questions about identification, arrangements and what is included.
