What Size Urn for a Large Dog?

Updated November 2026.

The short answer: size a large dog's urn by their usual, healthy weight. Dogs up to 30 kg (66 lb) choose our Medium–Large size. Dogs between 30 and 40 kg (66 to 88 lb) choose our Extra Large size. For a dog heavier than 40 kg, message us before you order so we can talk through the options.

What size urn for a large dog?

Large dogs cover a wide spread, from a lean 25 kg collie-type to a deep-chested 40 kg shepherd or retriever, and the right urn changes across that range. Our two larger sizes cover it: Medium–Large for dogs up to 30 kg and Extra Large for dogs up to 40 kg. The weight your dog was when well decides it.

How much space do a large dog's ashes need?

A common guide is about 1 cubic inch of space for each pound your dog weighed. It is a guide, not a measured volume. For a large dog:

  • A 25 kg (55 lb) dog: about 55 cubic inches, roughly 900 ml
  • A 30 kg (66 lb) dog: about 66 cubic inches, roughly 1.1 litres
  • A 35 kg (77 lb) dog: about 77 cubic inches, roughly 1.3 litres
  • A 40 kg (88 lb) dog: about 88 cubic inches, roughly 1.4 litres

Our sizes for large dogs

Our size Pet's usual weight Rough ashes volume (guide) Canopic jar urn, approx. outer size (W x D x H)
Small–Medium up to 15 kg (33 lb) up to about 33 cubic inches, roughly 540 ml 120 x 154 x 231 mm
Medium–Large up to 30 kg (66 lb) about 66 cubic inches, roughly 1.1 litres 140 x 180 x 270 mm
Extra Large up to 40 kg (88 lb) about 88 cubic inches, roughly 1.4 litres 160 x 206 x 309 mm

As a stacked canopic jar, Medium–Large measures approx. 140 mm wide, 180 mm deep and 270 mm tall, and Extra Large approx. 160 mm wide, 206 mm deep and 309 mm tall. The canopic jar weighs around 2 kg, varying by size. The same weight bands apply to our dog portrait, wrapped, collar and canopic jar urns, so you can compare styles at the same size.

Check the weight before you order

Large breeds vary a lot from dog to dog. Use the weight your dog was at when healthy. If they lost a lot of weight towards the end, which is common in older large dogs, their usual weight is the better guide. Between two sizes? Go up.

  • Use the weight your dog was when healthy. If they lost weight towards the end, their usual weight is the better guide.
  • If the crematorium gave you the volume of the ashes, use that figure and tell us before you order.
  • Between two sizes? Go up. A little space is better than too little.
  • Never use the outside measurements as the space inside: tell us the volume you need and we will confirm the size.

Which breeds are large dogs?

In practice, anything from a heavy springer or border collie upwards: Labradors, golden retrievers, German shepherds, boxers, and many large crossbreeds and rescues. A Labrador, for instance, is often right at the edge between our two sizes, so read our Labrador urn size guide. For a dog of exactly 30 kg, our 30 kg dog guide explains the decision. Giant breeds over 40 kg need a conversation: message us with their weight first.
