What Size Urn for a Border Collie?
Updated November 2026.
The short answer: size a border collie's urn by their usual, healthy weight. A border collie up to 15 kg fits our Small–Medium size. Most border collies are heavier than that, so many will choose Medium–Large, for pets up to 30 kg. For a border collie heavier than 40 kg, message us before you order.

What size urn does a border collie need?
Border collies are lean, athletic dogs, and their weight varies more than people expect between a slight working-line dog and a heavier, thicker-coated one. Breed guides and vet clinics usually give a typical adult range of about 14 to 20 kg (31 to 44 lb). A collie at the bottom of that range sits right at the Small–Medium limit of 15 kg. A collie at 18 or 20 kg is comfortably Medium–Large. Individual dogs vary, so use your own dog's weight rather than the breed figure.
How much space do a border collie's ashes need?
The common rule is about 1 cubic inch of space for each pound your dog weighed. It is a guide, not a measured volume.
- 14 kg (31 lb): about 31 cubic inches, roughly 510 ml
- 15 kg (33 lb): about 33 cubic inches, roughly 540 ml
- 20 kg (44 lb): about 44 cubic inches, roughly 720 ml
- 30 kg (66 lb): about 66 cubic inches, roughly 1.1 litres
If the crematorium told you the volume of the ashes, use that figure instead.
Which of our sizes fits a border collie?
| Our size | Pet's usual weight | Rough ashes volume (guide) | Canopic jar urn, approx. outer size (W x D x H) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small–Medium | up to 15 kg (33 lb) | up to about 33 cubic inches, roughly 540 ml | 120 x 154 x 231 mm |
| Medium–Large | up to 30 kg (66 lb) | about 66 cubic inches, roughly 1.1 litres | 140 x 180 x 270 mm |
| Extra Large | up to 40 kg (88 lb) | about 88 cubic inches, roughly 1.4 litres | 160 x 206 x 309 mm |
A border collie over 15 kg should choose Medium–Large. A collie of 14 or 15 kg who sat between sizes, or whose weight you are unsure of, is also better in Medium–Large: a little room to spare is kinder than too little.
Weigh the dog you remember, not the last month
Border collies often slim down in their last months, and older dogs can lose muscle quickly. If that happened, the weight they carried through most of their adult life is the better guide. A vet record from a routine check-up is ideal. If you have none, think back to the weight at their last booster visit.
- Use the weight your dog was when healthy. If they lost weight towards the end, their usual weight is the better guide.
- If the crematorium gave you the volume of the ashes, use that figure and tell us before you order.
- Between two sizes? Go up. A little space is better than too little.
- Never use the outside measurements as the space inside: tell us the volume you need and we will confirm the size.
Urn styles for a border collie
A collie's face is one of the most recognisable there is: the white blaze, the soft fold of the ears, the watchful eyes. Our portrait urns are shaped from your own photographs, so the markings and the angle of the ears you remember are what we work from. Send a clear face-on photo in daylight and a side view to start. The same three weight bands apply to every style.
- Custom dog portrait urn: a seated portrait shaped from one to five of your photographs, in chalk off-white, with a black plug closing the opening underneath.
- Collar urn: made to hold their own collar beside the portrait. Tell us the fastened circumference and strap width when you order.
- Wrapped pet urn: your dog's face held by curved, overlapping forms.
- Personalised canopic jar urn: black with antique-gold details, a portrait lid and your dog's name on the front. The lid rests on the jar without a seal.

Every White Doe dog urn is cast stone, finished by hand and made to order, with free tracked delivery in the UK and worldwide. For portrait styles you send one to five clear photographs and we share a digital proof before anything is made. The portrait, collar and wrapped urns are for indoors on a steady shelf, mantel or sideboard; the canopic jar can also sit in a sheltered outdoor spot. Support any urn underneath with both hands when you lift it.
Calculator and range
Our urn size calculator takes the weight in kilograms or pounds and shows the size. The full range is in pet urns for ashes, and how to choose a pet urn explains the differences between styles.
