Quick Summary
The process from photo submission to finished custom sculpture involves reference photography review, sculpting to the specific features of your pet, casting in concrete, hand-finishing, and quality checking before dispatch. Each stage takes time, which is why custom pieces have a longer lead time than standard items. This post explains each stage, what happens with your photo, and what level of likeness to expect from the finished piece.
This page explains what happens from the moment you submit your reference photo to the moment your custom piece is dispatched.
Every custom sculpture starts with a single photograph. The quality of that reference image shapes everything that follows.
Quick summary: You send us a photo. We turn it into a sculpture. But there's a proper process behind that, and knowing what happens at each stage helps you get the best result. This page walks through the five steps from your photo to the finished piece arriving at your door.
In this guide:
- Step 1: You send us a photo
- Step 2: We create a digital proof
- Step 3: We handcraft your piece
- Step 4: Quality check and finishing
- Step 5: Gift-wrapped and shipped
- Timelines and planning
- What makes each one unique
The short version
Photo in. Digital proof sent for approval. Piece hand-cast in our Cumbria workshop. Quality checked. Shipped to you, gift-wrapped if you want it. The whole process takes roughly 2-3 weeks depending on the piece.
Now, the detail.
Clear, well-lit photos showing the subject's face directly are essential. Multiple angles help — front, three-quarter, and profile if possible. Blurry or backlit photos limit what we can achieve.
Step 1: You send us a photo
This is where it starts. You place your order and send us a photo of the person (or pet) you want sculpted.
What makes a good photo:
- Clear, well-lit, front-facing. Natural light is best. Avoid heavy shadows across the face.
- High resolution. The more detail in the photo, the more detail in the sculpture. Phone photos are fine as long as they're sharp.
- Simple background. It doesn't need to be a studio shot, but a busy background can make it harder to isolate the features we need.
- One subject. If you want a couple or group, send individual photos where possible. We can work with group shots, but individual ones give better results.
For pets: The same rules apply. A clear, front-facing photo with good light. Avoid photos where the pet is mid-movement or mostly in shadow. A calm, alert pose works best.
What if the photo isn't quite right? We'll let you know. If the image quality won't produce a good result, we'd rather tell you upfront than deliver something that doesn't do justice to the person or animal. We'll ask for an alternative if needed.
We work from photographs, not life sittings. The finished piece captures character and key features — proportions, distinctive markings, distinguishing details — rather than being photorealistic.
Step 2: We create a digital proof
Before anything is cast, we create a digital version of the sculpture and send it to you for approval.
What you'll receive: A rendered image showing the sculpture from multiple angles. This gives you a clear idea of how the finished piece will look, the proportions, the likeness, and the overall form.
This is your chance to make changes. If the likeness needs adjusting, or you want a different angle or expression emphasised, tell us at this stage. Changes after casting aren't possible (stone is unforgiving like that).
For orders over £100: We always send a proof and wait for your sign-off before proceeding. For standard-priced custom busts, we still send a proof. We don't cast until you're happy.
Turnaround for proofs: Usually 3-5 working days from receiving your photo. Complex pieces or commissions with multiple subjects may take a little longer.
View our proofs and approvals page for examples of what the digital proof looks like.
Custom pieces take significantly longer than standard orders. Each stage — sculpting, casting, curing, finishing — requires time that cannot be rushed. Check current lead times on the product listing before ordering for a specific date.
Step 3: We handcraft your piece
Once you approve the proof, we begin the casting process in our workshop.
The material: We work in cast stone, a high-cement mix that produces a dense, heavy, solid result. It's the same material used in architectural restoration and traditional garden statuary. It weathers well outdoors, develops a natural patina over time, and has a tactile, stone-like finish that plastic and resin can't match.
The process: Each piece is cast individually by hand. We don't batch-produce custom orders. Your sculpture gets its own casting run, its own curing time, and its own finishing session.
Curing: Cast stone needs time to cure properly. Rushing this step weakens the finished piece. We allow the full curing period before moving to finishing, which is part of why custom orders take longer than off-the-shelf products.
What we can share and what we can't: Our casting technique is proprietary. We've developed our methods over years of testing, and we keep the specifics to ourselves. What we can tell you is that the end result is solid stone, hand-finished, and built to last. The process is the same whether we're making a custom bust or a garden ornament.
Step 4: Quality check and finishing
Every custom piece goes through a hands-on quality check before it leaves the workshop.
What we check:
- Structural integrity. No cracks, no weak spots, no areas that might deteriorate.
- Surface quality. We inspect the entire surface for defects. Small natural variations (air marks, texture differences) are part of the character of cast stone. Actual defects are not.
- Likeness accuracy. We compare the finished cast to the approved digital proof. Does it match? Is the detail level right? If we're not satisfied, we recast.
- Finish. Depending on the product, this might mean sanding edges, applying a sealant, or adding a paint finish. Every piece is hand-finished, so this stage is always done by a person, not a machine.
What if something isn't right? We recast. Simple as that. A piece that doesn't meet our standard doesn't leave the workshop. You'll never receive something we wouldn't be happy to keep ourselves.
Step 5: Gift-wrapped and shipped
Your piece is packaged, labelled, and sent out.
Packaging: Cast stone is heavy and solid, which means it handles transit well, but we still package carefully. Each piece is individually wrapped and cushioned. Fragile protrusions (if the design has them) get extra protection.
Gift wrapping: Select this option at checkout and we'll wrap the piece properly. It arrives ready to hand over. No re-wrapping needed.
What's in the box:
- Your hand-cast piece, individually wrapped
- A care card with instructions for looking after cast stone
- A brand story card about Ripleys Nest and where the piece was made
Shipping: We ship from our workshop in Cumbria. Standard UK delivery is 3-5 working days. For orders over £100, we use tracked and insured delivery (DPD or APC Overnight) so you know exactly where it is.
International shipping: We ship worldwide. International delivery times vary by destination. Tracking is included on all international orders.
Timelines and planning
Custom orders take longer than standard products. Here's what to expect:
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Photo review and digital proof | 3-5 working days |
| Your approval | Up to you (we recommend responding within 48 hours to keep things moving) |
| Casting and curing | 5-7 working days |
| Finishing and quality check | 1-2 working days |
| Shipping (UK standard) | 3-5 working days |
| Total (UK) | Roughly 2-3 weeks |
Planning for a specific date? Work backwards from when you need it. If it's a birthday, anniversary, or holiday, place the order with at least three weeks' breathing room. We'll do our best to hit your date, but cast stone doesn't respond to deadlines. The curing process takes as long as it takes.
Rush orders: Talk to us. If we can accommodate a tighter timeline without compromising quality, we will. If we can't, we'll be honest about it.
What makes each one unique
Two custom busts made from different photos will obviously look different. But even if two people sent the same photo, the finished pieces wouldn't be identical.
Cast stone picks up texture from the casting process. Air marks, surface grain, and subtle variations in how the material settles mean every cast is slightly different. The hand-finishing stage adds another layer of individuality. We don't use templates or automated finishing.
This is the point. A custom piece from Ripleys Nest isn't a print or a replica. It's a one-off sculpture, cast by hand in a small workshop in the Cumbria countryside. The person who receives it is holding something that exists once.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order a custom bust of a pet?
Yes. Dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, horses, anything with a face we can work from. The process is the same: send a photo, approve the proof, we cast and ship.
Can I order a bust of someone who has passed away?
Yes. We handle these orders with care. A clear photo is especially important here, as we won't be able to ask for additional angles. If you have multiple photos from different angles, send them all.
What if I don't like the proof?
We revise it. The proof stage exists specifically so you can flag anything before we cast. We'd rather spend extra time on the proof than cast a piece you're not happy with.
Can I add a personalised inscription?
On many products, yes. Names, dates, and short messages can be cast into the stone. Character limits depend on the product. Check the specific product page for details, or message us at hello@ripleysnest.co.uk.
Do you offer gift vouchers for custom orders?
If you want someone to choose their own custom piece, a gift voucher is a good option. They can use it toward any product, including custom orders.
